One of the most photogenic cities in the world, Dubrovnik is a sunny, picture-perfect paradise on the Adriatic Sea. It was formerly part of the Venetian empire and later a maritime powerhouse in its own right until the late 17th century. Yugoslav army forces attacked Dubrovnik in October 1991 following Croatia's secession - a strategically pointless siege that lasted for six months and killed 114 civilians.
